Albert’s story is one of reinvention and intrigue, filled with remarkable twists and turns. Born on 15 October 1826 to Robert (35) and Elizabeth (27) in the slums of Bristol, Albert rose to heights unimaginable for someone of his humble beginnings. His journey is marked by significant milestones:
- 1826: Albert Milsted is born.
- 1844: Marries Mary Ann Swift in Clifton, Gloucestershire, at just 18 years old. Mary, intriguingly, was 14 years his senior.
- 1851: By the census, Albert is living in Swansea with Margaret and their young daughter Alice, though no marriage record for Margaret can be found. Was he a bigamist?
- 1857: Marries Mary Murch in Plymouth at age 30. Together, they have six children and live in Plymouth before moving to London. Meanwhile, Margaret and Alice are living in Ebbw Vale.
- 1902: Albert passes away on 22 January in Wandsworth, London, leaving behind a legacy shrouded in questions.
Albert’s career was as varied as his personal life, beginning as a victualler before transitioning to hat maker, furrier, engineer, and eventually mine owner in Wales and Cornwall. His life was punctuated by numerous bankruptcies, yet he rose from the slums of Bristol to reside in a townhouse in Chelsea—an extraordinary trajectory.
